5 Ways to Feel Comfortable & Confident during your Wedding Photography

Kent Wedding by Dee Airey Photography

When you’re getting married it’s perfectly natural to feel nervous, especially about how you’re going to look in your wedding photos. Lot’s of people feel pressure to lose weight, work out more and trial different hair and makeup artists in a bid to look and feel their absolute best on their big day. Most of the time, it’s about the memory they’re going to carry forward, in their wedding photos. The pressure is on!

It doesn’t have to be so pressurised, not to mention the enjoyment you lose worrying while you’re planning one of the biggest days of your life.

There are so many enjoyable ways to feel confident and comfortable during your wedding photography.

Imagine this: you’re normally a size 16, and in your day to day life you’re pretty comfortable with that. Your clothes fit, you look pretty good and you’re happy with what you see in the mirror. Now all of a sudden you’re a bride-to-be and you decide “Oh my gosh, I can’t walk down the aisle like this, I have to be a size 12! You then work out, eat next to nothing and you get down to your dream-wedding-size-12. You look fabulous, feel great and love your photos. Now what are the chances of you going back to where you felt pretty comfortable, a size 16? The chances are high, and if that happens you’ll probably then look at your wedding photos and feel awful every time, until you can no longer stand to look at them.

Your wedding photos are meant to be lifelong happy memories…..so let me share with you how to make sure this is the case.

5 Ways to Feel Confident & Comfortable During your Wedding Photography

#1 Get comfortable in your own skin

Look at yourself in the mirror, appreciate every perfect imperfection, be grateful for the body you have. This is the body you walk around in every day, this is the skin that lovingly covers your body and protects you from the elements. This is the body that takes you from A to B every day. Really lean into how you look and embrace it, because the truth is, there’s someone who loves you just the way you are. If you need to take care of anything, take care of your health: take little steps to make changes in what you do and what you eat; get plenty of sleep and drink enough water. This in itself will make you feel better, and when you feel better, you see yourself in a new and improved way without effort.

#2 Shop for wedding attire that fits you perfectly

When you go in search of your wedding clothes, be that a suit or dress, find clothing that fits you like a glove. If your budget allows, go as far as having your outfit made. When you do this, there’s no size for you to feel pressured about. Before investing in your wedding outfit, think about buying one or two items of clothing that look great on you, that you feel great in, and start to appreciate yourself.

#3 Have an engagement/pre-wedding shoot

Most of the time, the worry about the big day is because most people don’t actually like someone else taking their photo. Most people are ok with selfies because we’re in control, we capture our ‘best side’ and we can simply delete if it’s not quite right. But put you in front of a wedding photographer and dozens of mobile phone cameras on your big day……..it doesn’t bear thinking about! So I highly, highly recommend having an engagement/pre-wedding photoshoot before your wedding, at your venue if you can. This will help you get comfortable with your photographer and the environment. It’s also a good time to say what you like and don’t like; and you can learn to trust that your wedding photographer do their best for you. The two way trust between you and your photographer is priceless. (see Blog Post on REASONS TO HAVE AN ENGAGEMENT SHOOT)

#4 No need to pose for your wedding photos

Spoiler alert….you don’t have to pose for your wedding photos. There it is, I’ve said it. The days of having to be formal and posey for your wedding photos are over. I always say to couples when they awkwardly look at me and smile….”Who did you marry today?”; and they automatically turn to each other, and that’s when the magic happens. That’s when they look their most natural and in love. That’s when I take the shot.

#5 Be yourself in your wedding photos

When your wedding photos are being taken, just be yourself and concentrate on each other, and having fun! It’s your day, your big day and everyone will comment on how amazing you look, because you’ll be at your most radiant, if you just be yourself!
